 | | Welcome! From 1946 to 1966, the A. C.
Gilbert Company produced what it called "the
most realistic model trains ever made" in
its New Haven, Conn. plant. The trains were
scaled at 3/16 inch equaling one foot, or in
other words 1/64 the size of a real train. The
name of this scale (sometimes incorrectly called
                "gauge") is "S" scale.
Although the Gilbert Company went out of business
in 1967, today the scale of "S" model
trains is still very much alive, and in many ways
"S" is in better health than ever
before! At the turn of the
21st Century, many of the old Gilbert American
Flyer trains have become valuable collectibles,
but yet many of less-rare Flyer trains are
inexpensive enough that they are still in
operation on model railroads around the globe!
Repair parts for the old Gilbert trains are still
available and there are plenty of brand-new
                "Flyer compatible" trains being made
                every year! The
Mountain State AF-Trains Web Site was created to provide
information about vintage American Flyer trains
to several different type of people. (Continued
